May the Fourth be with you

I had the pleasure of guiding Charles from Canada this morning and it was of course Maridalen that we visited. 4th May in addition to being Star Wars Day is right in the spring migration period and when you also have southerly winds and cloudy skies then it is fair to expect a lot of birds and at least more than the day before. Well, that was not to be the case and the mysteries of migration and weather continue to be just that – a mystery.

Despite there being no obvious arrivals of birds we did well though and recorded 50 or so species that we both saw with a number of other species heard only. Highlights were Three-toed Woodpecker which was a much sought after species for Charles, Black Woodpecker, Marsh Harrier, Pink-footed Goose, Black and Red-throated Divers, drumming Snipe, mating Goldeneyes, Hawfinch and Bullfinch.

This male Three-toed Woodpecker was found after quite a bit of searching and just sat almost motionless in this tree. We also heard another bird drumming in the distance

male Marsh Harrier (sivhauk) was the only species of raptor we saw and I would never have put money on that being the case

Lesser Redpoll (brunsisik) seems to be well established as a breeding bird in Maridalen now

Green Sandpiper (skogsnipe) and we also had Common and Wood

Goldcrest (fuglekonge)

Black Woodpecker (svartspett)
