The mountains 2023 - Hawkie

am currently in the mountains in Valdres with Conor in a repeat of a trip we carried out in 2021. The late spring is still very evident with snow over 1000m and large lakes still frozen although it started to break up yesterday. The last two days we have birded around the cabin but as I write this we are on our way to Valdresflya.

The snow and ice has led to some concentrations of ducks and waders although not as large as I had hoped for. Scaup and Temmincks Stints were highlights.

There are also not many raptors but we have seen 2 Hawk Owls and 2 Golden Eagles.

A disappointment was visiting the local Great Snipe lek we found in 2021 and it being empty. But when you just need to open the cabin door and can hear and see Cuckoo, Bluethroat, Ring Ouzel, Willow Grouse and bleating Snipe then life is good.

Here are some pictures of Hawkie to start with.
